Week of 9/12/11

Teacher Duties This Week
AM greeters (8:00-8:10): Small, Shultz, Rad
PM eyes on the blacktop (3:20-3:30): Heller, Donohoe

Department Teams - Wednesday, 9/15 from 2:15 to 3:30 pm
Teachers will have the opportunity to work in department teams this week. Once you get together, you can decide if you want to meet as a whole department or in grade level teams. I'll send an email out on Tuesday with more information regarding ideas to structure your meetings. It might make sense to focus on grade level teams but you can make that decision.
Emergency Drill
  • Wednesday 9/14 - You will go over the Emergency Drills during the first 15 minutes of Advisory.
  •  Thursday 9/15 - We will practice the actual Earthquake/Fire Drill during 6th period, it will be within the first 10 minutes, please wait for the directions over the loud speaker to begin.  (It is really an Earthquake Drill but it counts as both because the evacuation is the same for a Fire Drill)
Miscellaneous
Library Sign-up - You can sign up for the library in the Facility Request Binder by the teacher boxes
ELL Testing - All week
There will be CELDT testing each morning throughout the week. Thus, you may have some students pulled from your classes.
Volleyball tryouts
A large number of kids are trying out for our two volleyball teams. Thank you Sharon, Annalisa, Garrett, and Jessica for giving our students this opportunity. Stop by the gym if you get the opportunity. Practices are being held this week on T, W, and Th from 3:30 to 5:00 pm
School Loop - I'll work with Sharon to see if she can facilitate workshop after school within the next week or so for those of you who would like additional School Loop training. I have an letter going out to all parents this week that says (among other things) that all students will have access to School Loop in the next two weeks. It's imperative that all teachers begin posting homework and grades soon as parents will begin checking teacher sites - some already are. Sixth-grade ELA Core Teachers - I'll meet with you soon as I would like for you to take your classes to the lab so that you can sign students up. More on this later.
Back-to-School Night - Wednesday, September 21 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. On Friday, those of you who have tutorial will give students a handout where they can list their classes. Please instruct students to give them to their parents so that they can use them on Back-to-School night. We'll be all be together in the gym from 6:30 to 6:50 pm. I'll release you at about 6:4o so that you can get to your classes. I'll send a schedule of the evening before then. In short, we will have periods 1 through 7 with 4 minutes between each period. Parents will be in your classes for ten minutes each period.
Tutorial Period This Week
Remember to stamp the student planners of those students who you would like to see on Wednesday and Friday. Wednesday's tutorial will be a little shorter as you have to go over the emergency drill procedures. It's really important that we establish that this time be used by students to work on assignments, homework, to see teachers if they need additional support or enrichment, etc.
Article in Teacher Boxes
Sameerah will place an article in your teacher boxes that focused on strategies around checking for understanding. I'll do this from time-to-time when I see particularly good articles.
